Apayao is a non-coastal province of the Philippines in the Cordillera Administrative Region in Luzon. Its capital is Kabugao and boundary to the north is Cagayan,
Abra in east side and Ilocos Norte to the west, and Kalinga to the south. The province of Apayao is called "Cordillera's Last Frontier for Nature Richness". It’s rich
of a tough collection of natural wonders and resources comprising underground rivers, lakes, caves, exotic fauna, waterfalls and the impressive Apayao River.
Both originating from the province of Apayao are the Twin Rivers, Abulug River and Apayao River in the farthest north in the Cordillera region. The Apayao River is
connected to the Abulug River, which drains into the Babuyan Channel, at a point near Kabugao. Along with the Abulug River, the Apayao River is the farthest north
among the six major rivers that instigate in the Cordillera Region.
Most of the tourist attractions and recreational spots in the province of Apayao are said to be influenced with the river: the Apayao River. It is one of the five largest
rivers in the Philippines. The dominant Apayao River surges from a wide basin in the elevated physical structure of its western slopes that feed the towns of Kabugao, Calanasan,
and Luna. It traverses a total of six Apayao towns and passing through the Pacific Ocean at the coastal municipality of Abulug.
Whitewater rafting is said to be good on the Apayao River considerably due to the reasons that it is one of the cleanest rivers in the country. Abundance in wildlife flourishes
in the streams and adjacent areas and still preserved. Access to this area remains extremely difficult because of lack of roads. Recently, for the “Isneg” or Apayao people they used trails and rivers.
But for now, it can be access from Tabuk or Tuguegarao to Kabugao with motorized bancas that can be hired for trips on the river.
